Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park (AKNP)

AKNP is located in Mingin and Kani townships of Sagaing Division and covers an area of 159,761 hectares. The park houses the shrine and a reclining figure of Maha Kathapa, Buddha’s Saintly Disciple.

The park faces several threats, including small-farmer market-oriented agriculture, exploitation of wildlife and forest products, and management unit capacity.

Under the SGP, interventions aim to reduce small-scale farming, illegal selective logging, hunting of wildlife, and unsustainable collection of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and fuelwood. The program may also resolve solutions for mining issues.
