Collaborative Research on Ecotourism

Background

This research project was under the Bio-Bridge Initiative (BBI) of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and aimed to strengthen the technical and scientific cooperation between Korea and the ASEAN region. The project was piloted in two sites: Mount Makiling Forest Reserve in the Philippines and the Tarutao National Park in Thailand.

Objective

The pilot research project aimed to conduct a valuation of ecotourism in the ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHPs). It also aimed to pose insights into how the ecotourism approach may support biodiversity conservation and effective management of protected areas.

Components

The research project focused on the following:
  1. Facilitate the linking of needs through effective partnership
  2. Enhance participation of local people
  3. Transfer techniques and knowledge through technical modeling on the status of management using social big-data; field survey based on questionnaires to assess visiting satisfaction of AHPs; and technical workshop
