ASEAN Heritage Parks

Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park

Composed of seven major peaks with Mt. Malindang as the highest at 2,404 meters, and Mt. Ampiro as the lowest peak at 1,532 meters, the mountain range was formed through a series of volcanic activities throughout its long history.

The Park has a total land area of 53,028 hectares, with a core zone of 34,694 hectares and buffer zone of 18,334 hectares. It features waterfalls, crater lake and dense virgin forests, and straddles the provinces of Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur in Mindanao.

Unique Flora:

  • Calamus merrilii and 10 dipterocarp species including Shorea contorta, Shorea negronensis, and Shorea polysperma
  • Plants with high medicinal values,such as sili-sili (Drimys piperita), and kalingag (Cinnamomum mercadoi)
  • High valued ornamentals include Medinillamalindangensis,Caryota cuminggii, pitcher plants,and orchids

Unique Fauna: Aside from the Philippine eagle, significant species in the park include the Philippine brown deer; Philippine tarsier (Tarsius syrictha); Philippine macaque; Philippine rufous hornbill; palm civet and civet cat; Draco volans; flying lemur; monitor lizard; Malindang shrew; olive-capped flowerpecker; and Mindanao warty pig.

Habitat Types: Major habitats are grassland, dipterocarp forest, lower montane forest, upland wetland, and mossy and associated forest.

The mystical Lake Duminagat, which is one of the historical landmarks and ritual sites of the Subanen tribe, is ensconced in the national park.

Other activities that Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park offers its guests include bird watching and hiking through nature trails to see wildlife and various attractions such as the Malindang peaks, the Sebucal Hotspring and Piduan Falls.
